Living in the Panhandle of Florida we are only a day trip from several well visited vacation destinations along the Emerald Coast. We try our best to cook as much as possible at home, but we really do enjoy trying new places. Whenever we find ourselves taking the drive down to the South end, we try plan out our day and add either a lunch or dinner date into the mix of activities. Today we had to go to Fort Walton and decided to try a new food truck. If you are in the area go check out Phantom Tacos. It tasted delicious! I’ll be honest I am not a huge fan of corn tortillas. All too often they have this distinct flavor that just turns me away. I’m not entirely sure what causes it. I love corn, grits, corn bread, and corn chips. So, you would think I would like corn tortillas, but they are just not made the same everywhere. The tortilla shells here, however, didn’t have that unpleasant flavor at all! They were fresh and you could tell it! Jim had fasted for 40 hours before we arrived, so he was famished. He even joked about climbing in the truck and eating himself sick on tacos. (Don’t worry, he would never really do that.)
We each got a birria taco. They are not huge, so you could easily order more than one for a full meal. We of course decided to try the steak fries, birria nachos, and the birria ramen noodles. It all came loaded with all the toppings, but the best part was the birria dipping broth. There was plenty to use with our nachos and fries after finishing the tacos. Jim tried the extra hot Phantom Sauce, but the medium was plenty hot for me. Seriously go check them out! Just don’t take a HIIT class after like I did. That was a fun experience one shouldn’t repeat.
